Professor Gorgoulis is a molecular pathologist. He is Director of the Department of Histology–Embryology, Faculty of Medicine, National Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. He is also Chair of Clinical Molecular Pathology at the Medical School, University of Dundee, UK; Adjunct Professor at Biomedical Research Foundation, Academy of Athens; Honorary Professor at the Faculty Institute for Cancer Sciences, University of Manchester, UK; elected member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO).
Prof Gorgoulis’ research is on how cells react to oncogenic insults in order to preserve their homeostasis. His work, published in highly-impacted journals, has received >53.000 citations. He is recognized for proposing the “Oncogene-induced DNA damage model for cancer development” that led to the establishment of Genomic Instability, Replication Stress and Senescence as hallmarks of cancer. Within this context he developed innovative senoprobes, currently included in international guidelines for senescence detection, and specific senolytic platforms for selective elimination of these cells.
