About Conference

Biopolymers 2026

The 3rd Global Summit on Biopolymers and Bioplastics convenes in Rome at a pivotal moment for sustainable materials science. As the world faces mounting environmental challenges, biopolymers and bioplastics have emerged as essential alternatives to traditional plastics, offering biodegradability, reduced carbon footprints, and alignment with the principles of the circular economy.
This conference provides a platform to showcase these achievements, foster international collaboration, and address the pressing challenges that remain in scaling up biopolymer and bioplastic solutions globally.

Biopolymers 2026: Research Pain Points and Progress

Pain Points
•    Environmental Impact and Incomplete biodegradability
•    Production costs and scalability issues compared to petrochemical plastics
•    Limited performance in certain applications
•    Lack of standardized composting infrastructure
•    Unclear end-of-life management and recycling infrastructure gaps
•    Non-harmonised regulatory framework to fit across the fragmented global markets
Progress
•    Industrial Initiatives and Focus on Circular Economy has positive Market Growth projections
•    Technological breakthroughs in protein, cellulose, starch, PLA, PHA, and hybrid biopolymers, enhancing material properties and application scope
•    Development of Specific Biopolymers and Novel Materials
•    Waste-to-bioplastics technologies
•    EU Directive (EU) 2019/904 banning single-use plastics and promoting bio-based alternatives
